Doggie Alzheimer's Disease Responds to Cholodin

A medical condition known as canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) causes disorientation, confusion, memory loss and personality changes that are very similar to Alzheimer's disease in humans. Canine Cognitive Dysfunction is sometimes referred to as "old dog syndrome", "brain aging", "doggie dementia" or "senility".

Like Alzheimer's disease, the cause of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction is unknown, but physical evidence, found only in autopsies, reveals the same sort of degenerative brain lesions. With age, dogs, like humans, naturally accumulate deposits of beta amyloid, a nerve-damaging protein, in the brain. This starch-like protein builds up, becomes waxy, and forms plaque. As plaque builds up, it clogs the brain and inhibits the transmission of signals from the brain. In both Alzheimer's and Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, excessive senile plaque leads to more severe cognitive impairment.

Symptoms of Doggie Alzheimer’s or CDS:
· Stops responding to his name.
· Forgets once familiar tricks -- May stop responding to even basic commands
· No longer remembers routines
· Stares blankly into space or at walls
· Gets stuck in corners, under furniture or behind furniture
· Engages in repetitive and compulsive disorders
· Paces or wanders aimlessly
· Compulsively walks in circles... around a table or from room to room
· Appears lost or confused, even in familiar surroundings
· Dogs who knew exactly where their yard ended and never crossed the line, wander past the normal boundaries, becoming lost and confused.
· Easily agitated and/or barks for no reason.

Dogs who experience decreased interaction with people....
· No longer greet visitors or even family members
· No longer try to get attention
· No longer care about being petted -- They walk away even when being petted and receiving affection.

Dogs who experience changes in sleep patterns...
· Sleep more during the day
· Sleep less at night
· May wander around instead of sleeping

Dogs with CDS sometimes forget housetraining...
· They have "accidents" indoors... even soon after being outside
· They stop "asking" to go out
· They seem to forget the reason for going outdoors

Catnip Oil Tested as Stable Fly Repellent

A recent study indicates that catnip oil offers livestock handlers a safe, direct way to combat these pests. Not only does the oil repel stable flies, it also poses no risk to horses or other livestock and has the additional benefit of being a "green technology." Since the repellent would be derived from the catnip plant, it could be used by organic farmers who don't want to contaminate their products with unnatural chemicals. In addition, the oil has been shown to destroy stable fly larvae, effectively addressing this problem at its source.

One downside, is that catnip oil is highly volatile, meaning it disperses quickly, losing its efficacy within six hours. In order to produce a viable repellent, a controlled-release formulation must be developed.

W.Va. recommends rabies shots for horses

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia horse owners are being advised to vaccinate their animals for rabies.

The state Department of Agriculture issued the warning Monday. The agency says a horse in Monroe County tested positive for the disease and was destroyed in October.

The state says rabies vaccines are available for horses, cattle and sheep as well as cats and dogs.

State Veterinarian Gary Kinder says the Monroe County horse is just the sixth confirmed equine rabies case since 2000. He says the owner had seen a raccoon wandering through the yard during the daytime, about two weeks before the horse got sick.

Kinder says the horse's owner and the veterinary who treated the animal are being given rabies vaccinations. Rabies is considered incurable once symptoms begin.

Ear Mites in Cats and Dogs

There are several types of mites that can invade the ear canals of dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens. The same mite can affect both dogs and cats. In the puppy and kitten, the most common ear mite is Otodectes cynotis. It is not important in the diagnosis and treatment of ear mites to identify the species of mite. Regardless of the mite species involved, we usually refer to mites of the ear canal simply as ear mites. Contrary to popular belief, however, is the fact that ear mites can live anywhere on the animal's body.

How are the mites transmitted?

Ear mites are extremely contagious. They can be passed from the mother animal to her offspring. Additionally, the mites are easily spread to other pets within the household including cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, mice, ferrets, etc. Humans are not affected.

What are the symptoms?

Puppies and kittens with ear mites will scratch around their ears and/or shake their heads. The amount of scratching and shaking depends on the severity of the mite infestation. With more advanced infestations, the ear canals will bleed and either fresh or dried blood will appear inside the canal. Dried blood resembles coffee grounds. If you peer into your pet's ears and notice a build-up of a material that looks like coffee grounds, then your pet probably has ear mites, although a bacterial and/or yeast infection is also a possibility.

Ear mites are very common, but still serious. Left untreated, they severely damage the ear canals and eardrum and can cause permanent hearing loss.

If mites spread out of the ears to other areas of the body, the animal may or may not scratch the area.

What is the management?

Various commercial ear preparations are available to kill the mites. These products contain an insecticide, usually pyrethrin. Ear products without an insecticide will not kill the mites. Ivermectin, fipronil (Frontline), and selamectin (Revolution) have also been used by some veterinarians. Milbemycin (Milbemite) and Acarexx, a form of ivermectin are approved for the treatment of ear mites in cats. Depending upon the medication used, the ears may need to be treated two to four weeks until all mites are killed. As previously mentioned, many ear mites live all over the body, including the feet and tail. These areas should also be treated. Most products designed for fleas and ticks such as sprays, dips, and shampoos, which contain one of the above ingredients will be effective. Be sure to use products approved for use on dogs, and to treat the tail. This is because while sleeping, the tail is curled around the puppy's body where it lies in close contact with the ear. Because mites are very easily transferred between pets, it is best if all pets in the household receive simultaneous treatment. Most types of mites do not survive long off the pets, so the treatment of the house and yard is usually not necessary.

Can I get ear mites from my pet?

Ear mites are not considered to be a zoonotic disease (disease which can be transmitted from animals to humans).

What is Potomac horse fever (PHF) and how is it transmitted?

PHF has been something of a mystery to researchers for nearly 30 years. It was named after the river where it was first discovered, but it has been detected in many parts of the United States and Canada. It is usually found near bodies of water, but also has been found in areas as remote and arid as northern Wyoming.

PHF has a complex life cycle that is believed to involve bacteria, flukes, snails and aquatic insects, such as caddisflies and mayflies. This diagram provides an overview of the life cycle that can lead to infection in your horse.

Ford Trucks Polo & Balloon Festival

An event for the entire family is coming to Augusta on September 17-19, 2010. The Ford Trucks Polo & Balloon Festival has something for everyone. The Festival will be held at Barton Field at Fort Gordon Army Base. Thirty thousand people are expected to attend.

Twenty plus hot air balloons will take off from Barton Field each morning at 6:30 AM. A mass ascension is an amazing site. Guests are invited to walk among the six and seven story balloons as they inflate and lift off. On Friday night the balloons will be on Barton Field for a mass ascension and tether balloon rides. On Saturday morning the balloons will also lift off from the field. At dusk each balloon will inflate and hit their burners and illuminate their envelopes. As the balloons glow the U.S. Army Signal Corp. Band will perform a patriotic concert.

On the Polo side, there will be exhibition matches of the Sport of Kings provided by Stormbranch Equestrian Club. For the spectators you can try your hand at Club Car Golf Cart Polo or bicycle polo.

In addition to the balloons and polo events there will be a carnival and jump houses for the kids, pony rides, tether balloon rides, military displays, vendors, food and drinks. Proceeds will go to the families of our Service Men and Women from Fort Gordon.

Attendees will also be treated with a complimentary copy of the Aiken / Augusta Equestrian Yearbook for supporting the troops.

BLM Seeks Public Comment on Proposed Wild Horse Gathers

Carson City, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Carson City District today released two preliminary environmental assessments (EA) for public review and comment that analyze four proposed wild horse gathers to apply fertility control on mares and remove 318 excess wild horses. The gathers are tentatively scheduled for November-December 2010 and February 2011.

The Clan Alpine/Pilot Mountain/Pine Nut Gather Plan and EA analyzes the application of fertility control on mares and the removal of about 224 excess wild horses in the Pilot Mountain (Mineral County), Pine Nut (Carson City, Douglas and Lyon Counties), and Clan Alpine (Churchill County) HMAs in Nevada. A total of approximately 1,111 wild horses in the three HMAs would be gathered. Approximately 420 mares would be vaccinated with a two-year fertility control vaccine (Porcine Zona Pellucida - PVP-22), and then released with a total 887 horses back into their respective HMAs. Treating the mares will slow the rate of herd reproduction, assisting in maintaining the Appropriate Management Level (AML), and reducing the number of excess wild horses that would need to be removed in the future.

About 171 horses of the 224 excess wild horses to be removed are residing outside the Pilot Mountain and Pine Nut HMAs. Approximately 104 of these wild horses often congregate well outside the HMA on and along U.S. Highway 95 near Walker Lake, Nevada, creating a serious public safety hazard.

The Lahontan Herd Management Area (HMA) Gather Plan and EA analyzes the proposed removal of approximately 94 excess wild horses within and outside of the boundaries of the HMA. Induce Vomiting
If your dog has not already vomited, you need to get him to vomit as soon as possible. You can induce vomiting by orally giving your dog 1 tablespoon of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide for every 20 pounds of body weight every 10 minutes.

Delay or Prevent Poison Absorption
Give the dog a mixture of one tablet of active charcoal with 10cc of water for every two pounds of body weight and then have the dog ingest at least a pint of water. Depending on the condition of the dog, you may require a stomach tube to accomplish this; therefore, a veterinarian may be required. Thirty minutes after you have given the sick dog the active charcoal and water mixture, administer one teaspoon of sodium sulfate (also known as Glaubers Salt) for every ten pounds of body weight. If the sodium sulfate is not available, you may substitute one teaspoonful of Milk of Magnesia for every five pounds of body weight.

If you don't have any of the agents that are listed in the above paragraph, then you can substitute milk, egg whites or vegetable oil to coat the stomach of the dog. Furthermore, you should also give the dog a warm water enema. Keep in mind that these procedures will not cure your dog; they simply slow the absorption of the poison into the bloodstream of the dog.

Tips for Corrosive Poisons
If your dog was poisoned by a corrosive type poison such as are found in many common household cleaning products, drain opening liquids and commercial solvents, the poison will usually burn the mouth, esophagus and stomach; therefore, you should never induce vomiting with these types of poisons. If you do, you run the risk of causing a rupture in the stomach or more serious burns in the dog's esophagus.

To help treat dogs that have been poisoned with corrosive poisons, you will need to determine if the poison is an acid or an alkali. If the poison was acidic in nature, give the dog 1 to 2 teaspoons of Milk of Magnesia or Pepto Bismol for every 5 pounds of body weight. If the poison was an alkali type of poison, then give the dog a mixture of vinegar or lemon juice and water. Use four parts water for every part of vinegar or lemon juice used. Give the dog at least 3 or 4 teaspoons, of the mixture, for every five pounds of the dog's body weight. After administering the antacid or other type of mixture rush the dog to the vet as soon as possible.

The malt-flavored oral suspension is readily accepted by 95 percent of cats and 96 percent of dogs, according to Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis horse deaths climb as disease spreads beyond Southwest Michigan

The number of horses dying from the mosquito-borne Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus continues to rise, moving into central Michigan counties from Southwest Michigan, the center of the outbreak.

Laboratory tests confirmed that 18 horses have died of EEE, and an additional 56 horse deaths are suspected, based on the clinical signs displayed before death, said Bridget Patrick, risk communication specialist for the Michigan Department of Agriculture.

Disease again striking equine population

POTOMAC HORSE FEVER: Veterinarian says animals ill in St. Lawrence County, New York State ....August 2010

Veterinarian Kirsten D. Anderson of Lake Effect Veterinary Service, Watertown, said that in St. Lawrence County, she has treated "five to six ill horses in the last two weeks."

She said she hasn't seen any cases yet this year in Jefferson County.

Infected horses may experience fever, depression, miscarriages, rapid weight loss and a painful inflammation of the hooves, which often can be crippling.

Severe diarrhea also can occur, which could cause deadly dehydration if not treated.

The disease is believed to be transmitted when a horse accidentally ingests insects such as mayflies that are carrying a parasite known as Neorickettsia risticii. Snails and slugs are also a problem, since they can carry the parasite in their slime.

These pests thrive near water, which is a particular problem for the north country. Wet weather mixed with the area's abundance of rivers leaves huge swaths of the area susceptible to transmission.

"Having the wet season and then going so hot was definitely a breeding ground," said Corey M. Hayes, farm business management educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County.

Tetracycline antibiotics, such as doxycycline, are commonly used to treat the disease because of their effectiveness in killing the parasite.

A vaccination also is available that greatly reduces the chance of infection.

"Vaccination is key," Mr. Hayes said. "A $15 vaccination is a lot cheaper than $1,500 for supportive care."

BOSTON — The Department of Public Health (DPH) today reported that a four-year-old horse from Warren has been diagnosed with eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). EEE infection was confirmed by the State Laboratory Institute today. The horse developed symptoms on July 31 and had to be euthanized on August 1. The most recent case of EEE infection in a horse in Worcester County occurred in 2003 in Brimfield.

There was one human case of EEE in Massachusetts during 2008; however, there were 13 cases with six deaths from 2004 through 2006. EEE is usually spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. EEE is a serious disease in all ages and can even cause death.

"Isolated cases of EEE are always possible outside of the traditional hotspots where we see outbreaks of human disease," said DPH State Epidemiologist Dr. Alfred DeMaria. "This was an unvaccinated horse that lived adjacent to a very swampy area. We are hoping that it serves to remind people that both EEE, and particularly West Nile virus, can be present throughout Massachusetts during mosquito season. It is prudent to use bug spray and minimize your exposure to mosquitoes to help reduce your risk, no matter where you live."

The return of West Nile Virus to California

The return of West Nile Virus to California this year is renewing calls for horse owners to make sure their animals are vaccinated. So far in 2010, four horses have been diagnosed with the disease, in Sacramento, San Joaquin and Madera counties. All of the horses were either unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated.

Outbreaks of West Nile virus are still a risk for horses,” said California State Veterinarian Dr. Richard Breitmeyer. “Horse owners should contact their veterinarians as soon as possible to ensure vaccination status is current. If people get the necessary shots for their horses now, the animals will have optimal protection against the disease.”

Signs of West Nile virus include stumbling, staggering, wobbling, weakness, muscle twitching and inability to stand. Horses contract the disease from carrier mosquitoes and are not contagious to other horses or people. Not every horse exposed to the virus will die.

EP found in 11 horses in North Carolina

Raleigh, N.C. — Equine piroplasmosis, a disease thought to have been eradicated from the United States, has resurfaced in North Carolina and 19 other states over the past two years, Steve Troxler, state commissioner of agriculture, said in a statement Thursday.

Blood tests identified EP in 11 horses in four locations across the state recently, Troxler said.

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is conducting an investigation to determine the source of the disease and whether it has spread beyond the locations where the infected animals were housed.

Equine piroplasmosis is a blood-borne parasitic disease primarily transmitted to horses by ticks or contaminated needles. Mild cases of EP cause weakness and lack of appetite. Symptoms can include rough coats, constipation, colic, fever, anemia and low platelet counts.

"By law, suspected cases must be reported to the state veterinarian’s office," Troxler said.

Dry Pet Foods and Salmonella

There's been a lot of media coverage lately on pet food recalls due to possible or confirmed Salmonella contamination. In addition, a manuscript recently published in the journal Pediatrics1 reported on 79 cases of human Salmonella infection from 2006-2008 associated with contaminated dry dog and cat food – this is the first report of human illnesses linked to dry pet foods.

Because pet foods and treats contain animal-origin products, they are at risk of contamination with Salmonella, E. coli, and other organisms. In general, these products are cooked to temperatures that will kill these organisms – however, if a contaminated additive (a flavoring, for example) is added to the food after cooking or if the food comes in contact with contaminated materials, the food will be contaminated. There are many safeguards in place to minimize the risk of contamination during the manufacturing process, but using caution when handling these foods is always recommended.

Salmonella infection, like many other food-borne infections, usually occurs after the bacteria are ingested – this can occur by eating or drinking contaminated products, or by coming into contact with contaminated products and then touching your mouth, face or food. The organism enters your gastrointestinal tract and causes disease.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. However, not all pets carrying Salmonella will appear sick. Apparently well but infected animals can be carriers and may infect other animals or humans, particularly through exposure to their feces. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these signs, please contact your veterinarian.

Myristol's Effects on Clinical Joint Disease

39 horses in Missouri and Florida (on a broodmare farm, a Thoroughbred retirement center, and in two university equestrian programs) were selected for naturally occurring osteoarthritis that caused Grade 2-4 lameness on a scale of 0-4. Horses were either in the control group (no Myristol) or the treated group, which received three scoops (4 ounces) of Myristol daily for 14 days, then two scoops (2.67 oz.) daily for 28 days (42 total days of supplementation). Lameness exams at Days 1, 14, 28, and 42 were used to assess the efficacy of the supplement, and subjective quality of life was rated using a specialized 10-cm visual analog scale.

Researchers found that treatment with Myristol significantly improved lameness score, lameness at the walk, response to joint flexion, lameness after flexion, and quality of life (P values from 0.02-0.05, determining statistical significance) compared to controls.

Despite high group variation, they detected significant differences in five of six variables measured. Therefore, it was conclude that oral administration of Myristol had beneficial clinical effects on horses with naturally occurring OA. The most apparent beneficial effects were in parameters related to joint flexion. For many of these horses, this was a significant improvement in their quality of life. Heaves, Emphysema in horses

COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Heaves, Equine Asthma or Emphysema, Broken Wind are all names given to this debilitating disease in horses.

Causes:
COPD can be caused by dusty or moldy hay, dust and molds in bedding, or pollens, dust and other irritants in the environment. Any horse exposed to respiratory irritants may develop COPD. The longer they are exposed the more severe the condition may become. Horses kept stabled may be at higher risk.

Symptoms:
Coughing, increased respiration, labored breathing, yellow nasal discharge may be signs of COPD. Symptoms range in severity from mild, to so severe that the horse appears listless, has difficulty breathing and develops a muscular 'heave line' along the horse's barrel from taking a double exhalation. An elevation in body temperature is not a symptom of COPD. The horse's appetite should remain normal unless the condition has developed so the horse has extreme difficulty breathing.

Treatment:
First you need to understand this disease is treatable but not curable.

Eliminate as much exposure to dust as you can. Even water down the hay you feed. Stay away from dusty bedding. Feed good quality Hay

Since this disease is inflammatory the use of some anti-inflamatories may help. Prednisone, Triamcinolone (I do not recommend Dexamethasone) Or an herbal product called Vaxamine EQ

Bronchodilators such as clenbuterol called Ventipulmin or Albuterol Tabs can be given on a daily basis or as needed

Danger of Grass Clippings for Horses

Grass clippings that stay on the pasture after mowing, where they can dry in small amounts, are generally not a problem. But never gather clippings into piles to feed especially clippings from the family yard. This grass can contain high level of nitrites or insecticides. Also clippings are too easy to over-consume, and eating large amounts at one time can lead to excess fermentation in the hind gut, potentially causing colic and laminitis.

Piles of clippings can rapidly invite mold to form (especially prevalent in hot, humid environments), which can lead to colic. Finally, because there is no air inside a dense pile, botulism can develop, which turns this "treat" absolutely deadly.

Lyme’s Disease in Horses

The usual symptoms are signs of lameness, arthritis, neurologic disease, eye disease, and dermatitis.

Perhaps the most frequently reported clinical sign in this grouping is arthritis.. Lameness and joint swellings occur frequently in horses, and they can be from a variety of causes. Thus, the veterinarian first would eliminate these potential causes before turning attention to Lyme disease.

Arthritis that results from Lyme disease can involve one or several joints. The arthritis is often episodic, but can become chronic. Researchers say that joints of the forelimb seem to be affected most frequently and are often painful, warm, and swollen.

It has been reported that encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) has been associated with Borrelia burgdorferi infection in a horse.

The horse, he said, had a head tilt, paralysis of the tail, difficulty swallowing, glazed eyes, profuse sweating, and wandered aimlessly.

In another case, a pony was reported to have suffered eye problems after being infected with Lyme disease. The eye disease was similar in appearance to periodic recurrent uveitis (moon blindness).

On the bright side for equines, heart, liver, and kidney diseases that have been reported in humans as a result of Lyme disease have not been seen in horses.

Threat 1: Skin contact
When crude oil contacts an animal’s skin, it may cause a variety of deleterious effects depending on the species:

• Prolonged dermal exposure in any species may result in red, irritated, and swollen skin with the possibility of infection and necrosis (skin death).

• Animals with thick or long hair may be more severely affected by skin contact with oil, because the oil can become trapped next to the skin.

• Birds are particularly vulnerable to oil saturation. Oil disrupts the interlocking effect of their feathers and may render birds unable to fly, float, or maintain a normal body temperature. Therefore, they may not be able to escape from predators, care for their young, or find enough food to survive.

• Hoofed animals, such as cattle, can develop laminitis after walking in soil contaminated with crude oil, which is absorbed through the hoof wall and could cause inflammation.

LAMINITIS –FOUNDER SYNDROME

Laminitis is an important equine disease, with evidence of its significance going back to the beginning of recorded history. Today, laminitis is said to be the most common reason for a horse to be presented for veterinary treatment, with an overall incidence of about 2 percent in the United States.
